College of Healing Values: being respectful, honest and inclusive

Being respectful, honest and inclusive is a function of self-awareness. The core of self-healing work is to be honest with yourself, respectful of the way you process your experience, and inclusive of all parts of yourself, even those you would rather push away. It is important not to fall into judgement of yourself. As you learn how to do that for yourself, so you can also do that for others.

We all have anxieties. We all have hopes and aspirations. We all have a position from which we observe what is going on, and that influences how we interpret what we are seeing. Being respectful, honest and inclusive allows us to be aware of our own anxieties and expectations so that we can read a situation with clarity and respond in a way that brings a WIN/WIN outcome, or the solution for the highest good of all.

Being respectful.
Coming out of judgement allows us to be respectful. We respect ourselves by being accepting of our own painful experiences and we can be respectful by being accepting of the painful experiences of others. When you respect yourself, you trust that you have done the best that you could do in the situation you found yourself in with the resources available to you. We respect others by allowing them to be who they are and process their experience at their own pace in their own way. We respect the authority of others by allowing them to make their own decisions. Trust the innate wisdom of each person to find out what they need to find out at the pace they want to find it out at. This stops us operating with my will over thine.

Being honest.
It is important to understand the difference between acceptance and expectations. When we have expectations, we are attached to the outcome of our endeavours. We lose our ability to be open to other possibilities. We can’t be inclusive of things that do not match our expectations. When you are honest about what is going on, it gives you the opportunity to be accepting of what is rather than having expectations of what you want it to be, or what others think it should be. Being honest with ourselves allows us to deal with what is present and grow as human beings. It allows us to understand what is required to bring balance and access the resources we need to achieve that.

Being inclusive.
Being respectful, honest and inclusive helps us to hand responsibility to others for their choices and take responsibility for our own choices. It increases our possibilities because we can incorporate the ideas, resources and creativity of others when we work together. Everyone has a part to play. Everyone must do their own work at their own pace in their own way. We cannot do the work of others for them. Being inclusive helps us to move towards and broaden our experience. It gives us the opportunity to listen more, understand more and be co-creative.
